This week’s fishermen and fishmongers: 5th June

Our interactive map is constantly growing with new fishermen, fishmongers and merchants from across the country. Each week we will feature some of the new entries to the site, telling the story of the methods they use to catch, prepare and sell their seafood and the range of species available across the UK.

Arcade Fisheries, Hastings, Kent, England

Seasonal specialities include the famous Rye Bay Scallops, Wild Seabass, Dover Soles, Brill, Turbot, Dressed Crabs, Mackerel, Lemon Soles, Cod and much more. They also stock various smoked fish including Oak Smoked Haddock and Hot Smoked Salmon, both  of which are smoked locally in Hastings.

Menai Seafood Company, Bethesda, Anglesey, Wales

The Menai Seafood Company, have paired up with local food producers, to form Cadwyn Ogwen ,a Welsh social enterprise that is bringing fish caught by the North and mid-Wales fleets to the local community. This has meant that the local whelk catch, which was usually exported to South Korea, could now be processed and sold locally. With sales doubling since lockdown, they have also been able to increase their use of locally caught white fish such and pollack and coley, complementing their MSC certified mussels sourced from the Menai Strait.

Native Seafood & Scran, Coleraine, Northern Ireland

Native Seafood and Scran was born out of frustration. The frustration of living on the North Coast of Ireland and not having direct access to the abundance of incredible local seafood. With fish supply being readily available to local restaurants, there has been a void between fishermen and the public. This gap is one that Native wishes to fill. The vision for providing fresh fish incorporates modern and traditional methods; providing the chance to buy and order online, click and collect, and arrange delivery.

Initially intended as a restaurant, Native hopes to get to the point in a post COVID world to open the doors safely to the public offering fresh local produce, relaxed service and late nights of music and banter.
